25 Years of Service in the Army
Service Never Stops: How Ross Bryant Built a Legacy of Leadership After the Army
From Cold War tank commander to higher ed changemaker, Ross Bryant’s journey proves that purpose doesn’t retire—it just finds new ways to serve. This is the story of a soldier turned mentor who’s still making an impact long after the battlefield.
From Tank Commander to Changemaker
Ross Bryant’s military journey began in 1979 when he enlisted straight out of high school, determined to carve his own path. Despite a family legacy of Naval officers, Ross joined the Army as a tank crewman and soon proved to be a standout leader. After serving in Germany during the Cold War, Ross’s potential was recognized by his commanding officers, who encouraged him to pursue the Green to Gold ROTC scholarship. That leap of faith led to four command roles and the mentorship of dozens of young soldiers—many of whom would go on to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Creating a Community for Veterans at UNLV
After 25 years of service, Ross retired—but his mission didn’t end. In 2012, he founded the Military & Veteran Services Center (MVSC) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. What began as a small team grew into a nationally recognized resource that has supported over 8,000 military-affiliated students. With programs that offer peer support, mental health guidance, and benefit navigation, the MVSC doesn’t just process paperwork—it builds belonging.
A Legacy of Brotherhood and Purpose
Ross’s story is grounded in loyalty—to his country, his friends, and the community of veterans he continues to serve. Whether he’s honoring fallen comrades during the annual 60-mile Operation Battle Born ruck march, or reflecting on the life of his late best friend and fellow veteran Jim Althouse, Ross remains a powerful advocate for those who serve. His message is simple and strong: “We’re all in this together—and we serve best when we serve each other.”
